A few thoughts about G.I. Joe and Lillie from B.T. Bishop

Author Joseph S. Bonsall takes the reader on an amazing journey as seen through the lives of two very special people.

G.I. Joe is a Philadelphia street kid who joins the U.S. Army to escape a drunken and abusive father, as well as a non-caring mother. Like so many young men of the Forties generation, his journey takes him from basic training to being a part of the first wave of assault on Utah beach during D Day. His Tough Ombres of the Fighting 90th wage war through the bloody hedgerows of France and on toward Germany before he is seriously wounded on or about D Day plus 50. G. I. Joe earns the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, and the Purple Heart with Two Oak Leaf Clusters.

He travels down a rough road throughout his entire life but there is a woman who is always there to love him — through thick and thin. Lillie is a girl who was raised up hard in the Carolina dirt. She runs away from home and eventually joins the Women’s Army Corp. This woman of incredible faith, strength, and perseverance eventually meets the young wounded soldier and becomes his wife.

Lillie soon needs every bit of her faith in God to help her through the years ahead. Her life of love and loyalty is the stuff of American legend. Her story is filled with friends, family, faith, and hard work and will be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a story of patriotism, true love, and dedication — to husband, family, God, and country.

Reading about the journey of G. I. Joe and Lillie from World War Two to an honored resting place in the sacred ground of Arlington National Cemetery will have an effect on your life long after the book has been put down. You will become closer to God, closer to your own family, and closer to America, where the price of our freedom has been paid for by the likes of G. I. Joe, Lillie, and the fine young men and woman who are serving in our armed services today!
